Most travel medical insurance plans do not have copays, but many visitors insurance plans include copays for specific covered services. Travel medical insurance may also include other types of cost-sharing, such as deductibles and coinsurance.

A deductible is the amount you pay toward covered expenses before the plan begins paying according to its terms. Coinsurance is the percentage of eligible expenses you may be responsible for after the deductible. A copay, or copayment, is a fixed amount you pay for a specific covered service.

On most visitors insurance plans, copays apply to services such as urgent care and walk-in clinic visits in the United States. The amount and conditions vary by plan; other cost-sharing may still apply.

Trip cancellation insurance does not use copays. Some trip cancellation plans may include medical coverage, but covered medical expenses are not subject to fixed copay amounts.

  • Some plans waive the copay with a $0 deductible is selected.

What is a copay?

A copay, or copayment, is a fixed amount you pay for a specific covered medical service. For example, a plan may charge a set copay each time you visit an urgent care facility or walk-in clinic. Unlike coinsurance, which is based on a percentage of eligible expenses, a copay remains a fixed dollar amount even when the total eligible expense for the visit is higher.

A copay may not be your only out-of-pocket cost for a covered service. Depending on the plan, the copay may apply instead of the deductible, may be waived when a $0 deductible is selected, or may still be followed by coinsurance.

Review the plan’s cost-sharing terms for the specific service to understand which charges apply.

Do travel medical insurance plans have a copay?

Many travel medical insurance plans for the U.S. include copays for specific covered services. Copays appear on certain plans and for specific types of care, including urgent care and walk-in clinic visits in the U.S. In some cases, copays may also apply to certain emergency room visits or emergency eye examinations.

Among the visitors insurance plans reviewed by Insubuy, copays appear on plans that provide access to the UnitedHealthcare PPO network in the U.S.

The copay amount and conditions vary by plan, including how the copay works with the deductible and coinsurance.

* Copay does not apply when the $0 deductible is selected.

** The charge may apply as an additional deductible instead of a copay.

Copay amounts and conditions vary by plan and may change. Review the current plan information or certificate for applicable copays and other cost-sharing terms. If the summary differs from the policy or certificate wording, the policy or certificate wording applies.

How do copays work with deductibles and coinsurance?

Copays, deductibles, and coinsurance are separate types of cost-sharing; more than one may apply to the same covered service.

On some plans, the copay is not subject to the deductible. For the applicable visit, you pay the stated copay instead of applying the plan deductible to the service. Some plans waive the copay entirely when a $0 deductible is selected.

Coinsurance may still apply after the copay. For example, Atlas Essential America and Beacon America apply coinsurance to urgent care visits even though the urgent care copay is not subject to the deductible. Visitors Protect works differently. Its urgent care and walk-in clinic copays are not subject to either the deductible or coinsurance.

Review the cost-sharing terms for each covered service to understand how the copay, deductible, and coinsurance apply to your plan.

Do trip cancellation insurance plans have a copay?

Trip cancellation insurance does not use copays. Copays apply to specific covered medical services under some travel medical insurance plans.

Trip cancellation coverage instead reimburses covered trip-related losses and expenses according to the plan terms, such as certain prepaid, nonrefundable trip costs. Some trip cancellation plans also include medical coverage, but copays do not apply to covered medical services.
